flu season and free bookmarks
or a free eBook?
It’s flu season!

This is how sarcastically excited I am.
Baby H has been getting sick every two weeks, right on schedule, and my wife joined the fun just in time for her 30th birthday celebration last weekend. Somehow, I escaped unscathed. Maybe it’s because I’m vaccinated, or maybe God is really invested in this preorder for Threads of Light. Whatever the reason, we’re limping through. Productivity!
In the interest of awful segues, though, Threads of Light is coming out on Monday, March 3! That’s only 10 days away, and I’m celebrating with some fun promos—including a newsletter exclusive.

Writing Updates

Btw, I drafted this email on Tuesday and then wrote 9,000 more words between then and now, which meant I had to update the graphic. Absolutely wild.
TAMELANDS // Each chapter of this cozy fantasy novel is like a vignette from the protagonist’s story. There’s a bigger narrative, but I really get to focus on certain elements with different chapters, which is really enjoyable. Here’s a snippet from a recent drafting session:
“I guess I’ve never thought about it,” [Praetoria] was saying, happily keeping pace alongside Shepherd even though the path was clearly designed for one horse at a time, “but trappers would get a lot of benefits from caffeine pellets. Imagine squatting in a bog for six hours to catch a swamp mystical whose feces can cure baldness or something. Caffeine keeps you alert for a while, but you’d have to keep taking pellets to keep from crashing. You could probably stay awake for days—”
Shepherd imagined a flock of gryphons grabbing him by the shirt and carting him into the sky while Praetoria rambled blissfully on. It was a nice thought.
“—and avoid the crash until the job was done. I don’t think any of the classical trappers used caffeine. I know you drink coffee, but you’re not that old, not like the ones I’ve heard about. You’re probably thirty or fifty-five or something like that. The beard throws me off, even though Typho wants to grow one just like it. I think your bone structure would really pop if you shaved, and you’d also stop getting stew in it, which feels unsanitary. My mother uses a eucalyptus scrub that would probably do wonders for your pores, if you were ever—sorry, what was your question?”
The silence hung between them until Shepherd realized that she’d stopped talking.
“I didn’t have one,” he said slowly. “You asked if I’d had coffee, and then you just kept talking for half an hour, and now we’re here.”
SPOOKY THE THIRD // Editing has begun! My editor started working this week, and I’ll receive a couple of updates between now and March 31. I can’t wait to see how many shreds she’ll rip this manuscript into.
Honestly, though, it feels good to have someone else reading this. I finished the first draft six months ago and decided to forego alpha readers, mainly because life got wild. If you’re a Safran fan, stay tuned for beta reader announcements in a few months!
KICKSTARTER // Donezo. Dozens of physical books and ten Nightlight Boxes have been sent, along with so many digital rewards and eBooks. I’m in the early planning stages of the next Kickstarter campaign coming this September—more details soon…
THREADS OF LIGHT // 10 days! Don’t forget to preorder using the links above, and leave a review on Goodreads if you’ve already read it!
As always…
Don’t forget to check out Marrow and Soul wherever books are sold!
