What does “young adult” even mean?

Books for young adults are aimed at the 13–19-year-old crowd.

But I’m 31 and still a young adult. Right?

…right?

I was chatting with fellow author Emma Hill on Instagram Live this week…

And we answered the question of why we write young adult fantasy.

Emma was writing contemporary magical realism stories with romance baked in.

But as a teacher, she wanted to write something her students could enjoy.

Now, she’s sharing her Mage and Melody series with ravenous readers in her own classroom.

That’s a cool rationale—but it’s not mine.

I love YA stories for the stakes, the journeys of discovery, and the explorations of identity.

We all have to learn who are we are. And YA stories, especially YA fantasy, resonate with those of us figuring out our path forward.

If you’re neither 13 nor 19 years old, you may not think young adult stories are for you.

But your inner child is reaching, grasping, yearning for that sense of adventure and purpose.

All stories are reflections of our own humanity.

So how on Earth will a paranormal heist story with ghosts and pastries reflect back on you?

Let’s find out together.

I can’t wait to see you there.
